Who should apply?

  • Aged 18-35 (must not turn 35 before 31 March 2024 – except for LSEN schools where the age limit is 39 years)
  • Must live within walking distance from the location of the school
  • Only one opportunity can be taken up per household
  • Employed or participating in any learnership (not receiving any STIPEND, WAGE or SALARY)
  • Studying or training (even part time) ā€“ no form of studies for the entire period of the programme
  • In another programme of the Department of Education (e.g., Learner Support Agents, Care and Support Agents, Food Handler, Bus Controllers, Screeners etc.)
  • Receiving government grants for self (e.g., NSFAS, Funza Lushaka, SASSA grants such as SRD 350). Those receiving SASSA grant for someone else (e.g., child grant collectors ARE ALLOWED to apply); Those receiving disability grants ARE allowed to apply
  • Participating in any other government income earning opportunities
  • DO NOT have a criminal record
  • Must not be unfairly advantaged due to relationships with staff members (SMT or SGB)
  • This is an entirely new cohort: no one who held a position as an EA or GSA during Phase I, II or III of this programme is allowed to apply
  • Youth living with disability must provide a medical certificate confirming the nature of their disability
    Youth that do not appear on the National Register for Sexual Offenders (NRSO)
  • By virtue of the application, applicants consent to the Department of Basic Education submitting their details for screening against Part B of the National Child Protection Register as per the Childrenā€™s Act 38 of 2005.
