Independent Reading Step-by-Step

BEFORE
  1. Remind learners where the books are in the library. Ensure that books are levelled.
  2. Remind them to put their books back in the same place where they found them.
  3. Call 10 learners to choose their books quickly. Repeat this until every learner has reading material.
DURING
  1. First let learners read independently and silently for 10 min. Gradually increase this time each session.
  2. If learners have taken books that are too difficult, help them choose books at a more suitable level.
  3. Call them together and have a quick discussion about what they read.
AFTER  
  1. Make sure learners return their books correctly. If possible, assist them to borrow books.
