Shared Reading Step-by-Step

BEFORE
  1. Place the Big Book where learners can see the print
  2. Discuss the book’s cover and ask questions about it. Include predictive questions (based on the cover and title e.g. What do you think this story will be about?)
  3. Teach new vocabulary (with flash cards).  
DURING
  1. FIRST READING: Read slowly through the book, stopping at full stops, pausing at commas and raising your voice at question marks.
  2. Ask questions at different points in the book.
  3. SECOND READING: Read the book again and invite learners to read with you at certain sections (especially the key words or phrases). Encourage and praise the learners. 
AFTER  
  1. Thank learners for their participation and allow them to borrow books (if possible).

Turn to page 12 and 13 of your Reading Champions Manual to review Reading Aloud. 

Activity

In your notebook, list five questions you could ask learners about this front cover. Try to use all of these questions words: WHO, WHERE, WHAT, WHY and HOW.
